tim roller
Founder of Whitetail Journey
As a native and lifelong resident of Michigan, Tim Roller’s obsession with bowhunting whitetails began in the 1980s. By the early 1990s, he was traveling out of state in pursuit of them. It was during those early trips that a true passion developed—not just for hunting deer, but for consistently targeting mature whitetails.
That passion led Tim to hunt wherever opportunity existed: public land, small affordable leases, and permission properties across the Midwest. Over the years, he continued to hone his skills in states including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Kansas. Through trial, error, observation, and repetition, Tim learned that consistent success on mature deer is never accidental.
That belief—and a desire to help others succeed—led to the creation of the Whitetail Journey hunting television show. The show aired nationally on the Sportsman Channel and Pursuit Channel, and regionally throughout Michigan, for over 15 years. Every episode was filmed in 100% wild, fair-chase conditions, without the use of outfitters—showcasing real properties, real strategies, and real results.

Experience Matters
With more than 40 years of whitetail hunting experience, Tim has accumulated a wealth of hard-earned knowledge. Over the decades, he has been fortunate to hunt alongside—and learn from—some exceptional friends and hunters. Combined with his own experiences, those lessons have shaped not only who Tim is as a bowhunter, but also the specific techniques and tactics that have allowed him to remain consistently successful for so long.
Tim’s passion for the outdoors extends well beyond hunting. In college, he made the decision to leave a pre-med track and pursue a career as a professional fishing guide. |
In 1993, he founded Ultimate Outfitters Guide Service, guiding anglers on the world-class rivers of northern Michigan for more than 22 years. During that time, Tim guided clients from all over the world, helping them achieve true “bucket list” experiences. The pinnacle of his guiding career came on September 9, 2009, when he guided longtime friend and client Tom Healy to the IGFA All-Tackle World Record Brown Trout, weighing over 41 pounds, on the Manistee River.
All of this is to say: since the day he left college, Tim has spent his entire professional life in the outdoors, helping others succeed—both in the woods and on the water. That passion for teaching, mentoring, and problem-solving remains the foundation of Whitetail Journey today. For decades, seeing others succeed has been the true benchmark of Tim’s career.

Success Matters

Success, at Whitetail Journey, isn’t measured by inches of antler alone. It’s measured by landowners finally understanding why deer move the way they do on their property. It’s measured by food plots that get used in daylight, stand locations that actually match the wind, and access routes that don’t blow deer out before the hunt ever begins. It’s measured by properties—both large and small—that start producing consistent opportunities instead of occasional luck.
The photos you’ll see throughout this site represent over three decades of success across multiple states, property sizes, and hunting scenarios. Every deer pictured was taken using the same principles, strategies, and habitat design concepts Tim now teaches and helps implement for his clients. Tim often refers to his approach as “Whitetail Manipulation”—the intentional design of habitat, food, pressure, and access to influence how deer use a property, and then positioning the hunter to take advantage of it. |
If you’re serious about improving your land, stacking the odds in your favor, and creating repeatable success—not just once, but year after year—Whitetail Journey exists to help you do exactly that.
